    Big Day!

    NiallMay 19, 2008

As part of my training in the Diploma of Community Welfare Work/Mt Louisa Counselling course, today was a particularly busy day! There were two huge challenges to face today - although the first wasn’t a threat really as I do enjoy public speaking and particularly when talking about social justice and issues that I am passionate about. The second challenge however was indeed a test of skills learnt both at the course and my placement!

So, the day began at our usual Monday morning gathering for the Diploma in Dandenong, a group I have been part of that is studying advocacy had to present an advocacy plan to group. The presentation went remarkably well and while we were the first group, the following group (there are three groups) were at a disadvantage in a way as they were compared to our presentation. I used Keynote and presented part of the Keynote presentation that I recently developed with one of the volunteers from The Dining Room to talk about homelessness. Our presentation was on the fact that there is no Crisis Accommodation at all within the Yarra Ranges. So, while the presentation went well I hope to utilise some of the info and skills to actually advocate for some Crisis Accommodation within the Shire! The group I am part of is quite interesting and full of great people, ranging from an African immigrant to two wonderful women with lots of patience and understanding.
