As part of my training in the Diploma of Community Welfare Work/Mt Louisa Counselling course, today was a particularly busy day! There were two huge challenges to face today - although the first wasn’t a threat really as I do enjoy public speaking and particularly when talking about social justice and issues that I am passionate about. The second challenge however was indeed a test of skills learnt both at the course and my placement!
So, the day began at our usual Monday morning gathering for the Diploma in Dandenong, a group I have been part of that is studying advocacy had to present an advocacy plan to group. The presentation went remarkably well and while we were the first group, the following group (there are three groups) were at a disadvantage in a way as they were compared to our presentation. I used Keynote and presented part of the Keynote presentation that I recently developed with one of the volunteers from The Dining Room to talk about homelessness. Our presentation was on the fact that there is no Crisis Accommodation at all within the Yarra Ranges. So, while the presentation went well I hope to utilise some of the info and skills to actually advocate for some Crisis Accommodation within the Shire! The group I am part of is quite interesting and full of great people, ranging from an African immigrant to two wonderful women with lots of patience and understanding.
Second momentous thing was the Helper’s Course that I have been taking with my placement with The Dining Room. We have been doing a course on coming alongside those we meet at The Dining Room and providing Quality Presence amoungst other things! So, tonight was our chance to role-play the situation, and as I am already a student, David Knoop, The Dining Room co-ordinator and trainer, had me face two people instead of the usual one! I admit that I was nervous but I went into it calmly and with peace of mind, and while it started slow, it escalated as the second person joined the table! Anyway, it went well and while I was critical of myself (self awareness is apparently a key to counselling!) it was received well by David and the others.
My mate Matt is also doing the course and his role-play is next week! I am not sure if he feels relieved or worried about now!
I must admit that I am pleased that the day is over! But I am also rather thankful that I am learning new and very valuable skills to serve.
