• Tell Kev we don’t want the Cluster Bombs

    May 28, 2008

AVAAZ.org - a group that I am part of is working on a campaign to educate and encourage the Australian Government to join the countries banning the cluster bombs and cancel the order the Aussie Government has for these weapons. Avaaz are inviting folk to enter their details which then becomes a personalised message for Kevin Rudd about the negotiations.

I urge all Aussies and those elsewhere to join with Avaaz in shouting out about this matter. So far 55,911 have sent messages. Help us get to 75,000!

    From the AVAAZ.ORG site

Final negotiations between 116 countries are underway right now in Dublin, Ireland, on a treaty to ban cluster bombs. Arms manufacturers are pushing governments to riddle the treaty with loopholes and delays — and the final text will be decided in the next 72 hours. Most governments agree that these weapons, which can detonate and kill long after their release, should be outlawed, but back-room pressure is rising to undercut a strong ban.

The treaty to ban cluster munitions is the result of an inspiring, years-long campaign by citizens from around the world — with victims and survivors of cluster bombs leading the way. Now, we can do our part, and raise a massive cry as the negotiators spar over the final text of the treaty. Sign the petition, watch a video petition from a cluster bomb victim and activist, and check out a map of countries that produce or use cluster bombs and send a message to your leaders, all from this link:
