• Wake Up Woolworths!

    June 8, 2008

I was going to the local shopping centre the other day and there were these folks standing outside the doors to the shopping centre handing out fliers and leaflets that were very bold in their stark black & white with blood red lettering helping make their point. Curious, I was given a flier as the guy who handed it to me gave me his spiel that he had probably told many, many times that day. But it was what he had to say that caught my interest and I want to share with you now.

Here’s what they had to say…..

    Shocking Facts About Woolworths

Woolworths continues to source Select paperproducts from Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), a company with an appalling environmental, social and financial record. Woolworths has been repeatedly advised about its supplier’s terrible behaviour.

“Their (APP) customers around the globe should demand that they responsibly manage these forts to protect the wildlife and people that reply on them” (WWF)

APP destroys Indonesian rain forest and logs illegally

“APP hides its continued destruction of natural tropical rain forests that house Sumatran tigers and elephants behind a global advertising campaign that misleads buyers who are increasingly concerned with the company’s poor environmental performance.” (WWF 20 October 2006)

“Asia Pulp & Paper has… destroyed and illegally cleared indigenous forest.” (CCTV International , April 2007)

“APP shows a total disregard for the ecosystem in their quest for cheap sources of raw materials.”

Woolworths says it sources Select from APP because it is cheaper for consumers. The real reason is because Woolworths makes more money.

The campaign aims to send a postacrd to the Woolworths managong director asking hims to earn some real green credentials by doinfg the right thing and sourcing Select Brand paper from a sustainable manufactiyer.

Here’s a copy of news reports about the campaign: SMH & The Age.

The guy who did hand me the flier and postcard did ask me not to buy Select Paper Products, and I agreed. I didn’t want to tell him I was heading to Coles anyway. But please consider this if you do shop at Woolworths!
