Voices from The Heartland - Your chance to ask a question

    NiallMay 29, 2008

GetUp! - a non-profit action group I belong to is taking the national reconciliation conversation that began on April 29 in over 350 local groups of indigenous and non-indigenous Australians to Central Australian communities - creating a virtual realtionship by asking us to record and upload video questions to their website.

Tell Kev we don’t want the Cluster Bombs

    NiallMay 28, 2008

AVAAZ.org - a group that I am part of is working on a campaign to educate and encourage the Australian Government to join the countries banning the cluster bombs and cancel the order the Aussie Government has for these weapons. Avaaz are inviting folk to enter their details which then becomes a personalised message for Kevin Rudd about the negotiations.

I urge all Aussies and those elsewhere to join with Avaaz in shouting out about this matter. So far 55,911 have sent messages. Help us get to 75,000!

    Mark Sayers in blogland

    NiallMay 22, 2008

Mark Sayers, a mate and man of God whom I admire and respect, has started blogging again after an absence of many months. Mark is well known for his particiaption in the Red Network, but even more so for his book and DVD “The Trouble with Paris”, and his ministry with the UBER Ministries.

Recently Mark wrote something that I totally resonated with. In his post, “The Politcal Incorrectness of a Non-Judgmental God“, Mark writes,

    Compassion Bloggers

    Niall

I have just signed up with Compassion Bloggers, to be part of the effort to spread some of the news and efforts of Compassion International. Shaun Groves whom I wrote about in a previous post, works part-time with Compassion International and runs Compassion Bloggers. Shaun writes on his shlog:

Every month I’ll be sending out an e-mail (to folks who sign-up for it) asking bloggers to post about a specific Compassion-related need. Last month, for example, it was a campaign to buy malaria nets. Thousands of dollars were raised through the efforts of bloggers so that thousands of kids can now sleep without being bitten by a malaria-ridden mosquito. That’s thousands of kids released from disease.

I’m calling these little e-mailed thingies “assignments”, but think of them as “missions” or “directives” or “stuff to blog about when you’re out of stuff to blog about” if that’s better for you. No matter what they’re called, they’re important in mobilizing bloggers to use their words and their corner of the blogosphere to make real changes in the developing world.

And another thing. If you blog for Compassion like this on a monthly basis, I’ll send you a little bitty badge thingy you can put in the sidebar of your blog that simply says “I’m A Compassion Blogger.” That’s coming soon.

I would encourage you to sign up and add just one post a month on your own blog to Compassion and the work they are doing.

    Thanks for the linkage!

    NiallMay 21, 2008

Well I must say that I was pretty chuffed today when I opened NetNewsWire to read my daily dose of blogs when I cam across Shaun’s Grove’s blog to find that he had written about my link to him (in the right column) and recommending my humble blog as something to read!

Shaun Groves, musician, song writer, performer, author and advocate for Compassion International and a fellow discipler from the USA, linked to me from his blog - shlog recently, encouraging folks to read mine after I linked to his blog. I must admit that I have been an avid reader of Shaun’s blog (hence the name - shlog) - very cool looking design of an open newspaper, coffee stains and all - for some time now, reading his insights and travels with Compassion International to Haiti, as well his thoughts and work with IKON, a college and young adult Bible study he began co-teaching at his church lat year. Also really enjoyed relating to his posts while his wife was away - including the videos!

I am pleased he has started to also read Alan Hirsch’s blog - The Forgotten Ways - recently, I know that he’ll enjoy that (and I hope hear and meet Al sometime!)

If you get a chance to hear Shaun speak or play - I have only heard him online - I would recommend it! Otherwise, have a look at his site and enjoy Shaun’s music and musings!
