Channel 7 sucks… ok, maybe crass, but they stuffed up bad! (Again and again!)

    NiallAugust 12, 2008

I am supporter of GetUp, the social action group that rallies Australians to get together and make a statement about many issues that the Government needs to pay attention too.

GetUp organised to air a commercial urging our Prime Minister to not be silent about Tibet. GetUp raised support to produce and screen the ad during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. The ad was professionally produced, airtime booked professionally etc, etc but….. it failed to air. Here’s what GetUp had to say about this. (more…)

How many members of a committee does it take…?

    NiallJuly 30, 2008

Sorry for so many posts today - I am having a quiet day and have been reading my News reader and reflecting on where things are going for me and the family. Anyway! This video was on a blog I read by someone employed to help produce media for a church in the US. I laughed so much throughout, relating to the poor designer the whole way through. My past in advertising, marketing and graphic design was so much like this video it is scary!

You guys wander why many things look as they do… behold and wonder at the creative process! LOL! (more…)

St. Vinnies - This Time it’s Personal - really?

    Niall

You may know I have previously had a rant about the quality of the food that the local St. Vinnies hands out to those in need. However, I have just seen the latest ad campaign that they will be running and want to share it here and let you know that while I think it is great, the campaign might raise funds and tickle the tear-ducts and wallets of Mr & Mrs Aussie Consumer, but that means nothing if the services you are providing are given with the same thoughtfulness and effort that the fund raising is made with.

As a Catholic charity, I would hope that the main motivation of the group is to serve and love like Jesus - and not contribute to the bottom line of the Catholic church (or that matter any church group, I’m not trying to pick on the Catholic church especially!). (more…)

So, early Christians did meet in a Church Building!?

    NiallJune 11, 2008

I was reading my RSS reader this morning over a coffee and almost spilt my coffee over myself and my laptop when I read one of the headlines streaming from the ABC. The headline was “World’s first church unearthed in Jordan” - so, there I was thinking they had unearthed a mass grave of early Christians, slaughtered by the Empire of the time.

But no. The article goes on to say that archaeologists have unearthed a shelter, or place where early Christians hid. (more…)

Reggie McNeal - It’s AD30 All Over Again!

    NiallJune 8, 2008

One the men I love and respect as a teacher and mentor, Alan Hirsch, recently had this fantastic video of Reggie McNeal speaking on his blog. It was very powerful and thought provoking I wanted to share it with you. (HT Alan)

Addendum - In case you missed it or are reading this in an RSS reader, Brad Brisco has let me know there is another video of Reggie speaking about the same thing on his blog, as well as a link to the audio of both talks. Thanks Brad - I would also recommend adding Brad’s blog exploring missional church to your reading.

    Food Matters

    NiallJune 6, 2008

A very good mate of mine recently sent me to a new website he had come across while researching nutrition for his family. They have had to make some major adjustments in their eating to accommodate allergies - but they feel they are better off for it, health wise.

Anyway, the site is called FOODMATTERS and is basically set up to sell and promote the film, Food Matters by two nutritionists turned filmmakers, James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch. They ask if we are sick and tired of the confusion surrounding food and want to feel good and prevent or reverse illness and disease? I answered yes, and I am sure many folk would too.

Here’s the films trailer. The website has a better quality version, as well as having the ability to screen the video over the web, or order a DVD.

Big Buck Bunny - Very Funny!

    NiallJune 5, 2008

Thanks to a blog that I read - No Fat Clips - I discovered the very funny and delightful open source software-produced short film - “BIG BUCK BUNNY“. The short follows Big Buck Bunny as he awakes from a sleep to enjoy a beautiful day on the meadow, sniffing flowers and being entranced by butterflies, but his day is about cgange when he meets the spiteful squirrels!

The film was produced to highlight the open source software - Blender - and the production took place in the Netherlands with a team from around the world. I screened it on my Mac for the wife and kids - and had the three kids roaring with laughter, not to mention my wife was laughing with the kids! The film is a delight to watch and an amazing credit to the software and team that that made it.

The film has a pretty comprehensive website with news about the film and it’s production. So, worth checking out! They are also selling a DVD of the film - but in my view the price is waaay too high for the short film and the extras they have included. Come on guys - don’t be too greedy!

But be sure to download the film and enjoy it with your kids (and spouse!). The film has a Creative Commons Licence and is available in multiple formats and sizes! Spread the word and enjoy the film - I would love to hear your thoughts about it.

    God is a DJ

    NiallMay 31, 2008

I imagine this may have already been discussed by the likes of Johnny Baker and others but I have been a bit of a fan of Faithless since I saw them once in concert. We scored a copy their album with this song on it and while I have added it to my rotation in my iPod, my wife is not too keen on it. But this particular song, God is a DJ has intrigued me since then. So, I have often thought about it’s meaning. Before I go any further, here’s the video.

Tell Kev we don’t want the Cluster Bombs

    NiallMay 28, 2008

AVAAZ.org - a group that I am part of is working on a campaign to educate and encourage the Australian Government to join the countries banning the cluster bombs and cancel the order the Aussie Government has for these weapons. Avaaz are inviting folk to enter their details which then becomes a personalised message for Kevin Rudd about the negotiations.

I urge all Aussies and those elsewhere to join with Avaaz in shouting out about this matter. So far 55,911 have sent messages. Help us get to 75,000!
