• Old Books?

    NiallJune 25, 2008

if you have any old books, of any nature, but particularly church based, I would love to have them! If you would consider donating them to me, I am planning on starting an online second-hand bookstore in teh very near future to support the ministry I am doing in Mooroolbark and Croydon here in Melbourne.

Email me or use the contact form to let me know - and if you are an established author in the church/christian/emergent fields, I would love to talk to you about stocking your books on the site for sale here in Australia and New Zealand.

    Hope to hear from you!

At The Trouble with Paris Book Launch

    NiallJune 15, 2008

Well, today (you may recall I posted about the upcoming event here) was the book launch for Mark Sayers‘ book, “The Trouble with Paris” at the place that Red East meets, and I was lucky enough to go along with Darren C after dropping his daughter and my son at their classmates birthday party at Hungry Jacks (Burger King for you Yanks!). We arrived in Box Hill about an hour early and went for a walk to a cafe in the Box Hill arcade - man that place has changed. Sorry there are no pics of the event - I didn’t have my camera with me, so I will see if there are any published on Mark’s blog later!

Anyway, we went back to the East Red office up some stairs into a really cool space that Red East meets in. There were some folk there I had seen before at similar events so it was good to make some new friends and acquaintances. I was also pleasantly surprised to bump into an old mate from my sojourn at Oxley College as well as some folk I had met at a recent job interview.

    God is a DJ

    NiallMay 31, 2008

I imagine this may have already been discussed by the likes of Johnny Baker and others but I have been a bit of a fan of Faithless since I saw them once in concert. We scored a copy their album with this song on it and while I have added it to my rotation in my iPod, my wife is not too keen on it. But this particular song, God is a DJ has intrigued me since then. So, I have often thought about it’s meaning. Before I go any further, here’s the video.

    Missio Dei Breviary

    Niall

One of the guys I admire and have been following on the net, is a fellow by the name of Mark Van Steenwyk, who founded Missio Dei, an Anabaptist new monastic missional community in Minneapolis. I admire Mark for the work he is doing and for the way he rallies others who share the same or similar vision to join together to dialogue with The Jesus Manifesto and Christiarchy.

But it is the Breviary that Missio Dei recently published that I am going to write about in the coming weeks as I start to utilise the breviary for morning and afternoon prayers. My plan is to start tomorrow morning, and try establish a rhythm of spending time with God in the mornings and afternoons with the aid of the breviary. Why did they create the breviary? (more…)

Aligning my body with the Planet

    Niall

Further to my post about my affect on the Planet, I happened upon a fellow called Jon Gabriel.

Now before I go any further, let me share that yes I am have tried many, many diets in my life time and the only success I could boast would have been the time with Weight Watchers… but costs and a move interstate put that to rest amidst the stress of moving etc. So yes, I am overweight and yes, I have tried many diets and in fact would consider myself skeptical of anything that promotes weight loss - even the tv reality show - the one I won’t mention but you know what I mean.

    Don’t aim - Just Rain.

    NiallMay 25, 2008

I was reading the comments on a Facebook Group about a new book due to come out soon called “SIN BOLDLY: A Field Guide for Grace” by Cathleen Falsani in which she invites people to comment about their experiences of Grace. One comment in particular captured my heart by a guy called Larry.

And then my wandering mind goes to Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount where he said it rains on the just and the unjust.

I’m a dope, I want to save my nurture for people I think are deserving. Jesus, meanwhile, says to give your love like a dumb cloud. Don’t aim… just rain.

I know for me - it took someone showing Grace to me for the word to really become more than a word that we talk about. I knew about Grace from growing up in the church but it was a mate of mine who showed me Grace - and now I feel I understand it more and more - in fact I don’t think I will ever really fully comprehend the Grace that Jesus talks about but for my time here on this planet I can show Grace, and in Larry’s words I won’t aim - I’ll rain Grace over everyone.

I look forward to reading Cathleen’s book too!

When did you learn about Grace - and not just the Sunday School or theological definition, I mean understand what it means in your life and heart?
