    NiallAugust 14, 2008

Myself, David K, and three other volunteers from The Dining Room spoke tonight at a gathering of local churches that have joined together to provide some welfare assistance as a group in their area. We were invited to speak about The Dining Room to a group of church leaders, volunteers and people who had been actively providing welfare assistance for the past ten years. (more…)

    NiallJuly 2, 2008

Here’s a cool Wordle from what is known as The Jesus Manifesto - The Sermon on the Mount. I love the fact that the three biggest words are Father, heaven, and will.

    Reasons Muslims Convert to Christianity

    NiallJune 20, 2008

A recent survey of 750 Christians who had converted from Islam revealed five common reasons why they choose to follow Christ.

    1. The lifestyle of Christians. Former Muslims cited the love that Christians exhibited in their relationships with non-Christians and their treatment of women as equals.
    2. The power of God in answered prayers and healing. According to the survey, experiences of God’s supernatural work increased after their conversions. Often dreams about Jesus were reported.
    3. Dissatisfaction with the type of Islam they had experienced. Many expressed dissatisfaction with the Qur’an, emphasizing God’s punishment over his love. Others cited Islamic militancy and the failure of Islamic law to transform society.
    4. The spiritual truth in the Bible. Muslims are generally taught that the Torah, Psalms, and the Gospels are from God, but that they became corrupted. These Christian converts said, however, that the truth of God found in Scripture became compelling for them and key to their understanding of God’s character.
    5. Biblical teachings about the love of God. In the Qur’an, God’s love is conditional; but God’s love in the Bible for all people was especially eye-opening for Muslims. These converts were moved by the love expressed through the life and teachings of Jesus.

    We Can Be The Change

    NiallJune 5, 2008

A man whom I respect, love and admire, Dave Andrews, has a website called wecan.be -calling on us all to be the change in the world and not to let the extremists from both ends and all reglions and factions set the World’s agenda. He says that small changes - little changes by individuals may just be that - little changes, but that cumulatively, when teh same action or joined, they are BIG changes.

Dave calls us to go from Plan A - Treat others Like They Have Treated Us - to go to Plan Be; Treat Others Like We Would Like to Be Treated. This, the Golden Rule, is a common thread for all major religions. But, as Andrew says,

“The strength of the Golden Rule is that everybody agrees that it is great place to start. Its weakness is that though its nice and warm and fuzzy people find it a bit vague as guideline.

Which is why Jesus of Nazareth spent so much time unpacking the specific implications of the Golden Rule in his Sermon on the Mount - summarising his suggestions in his Beatitudes.

But the trouble is, few people who would claim to be admirers of Jesus - even among those who would call themselves “believers” – take the Be-Attitudes seriously as ethical guidelines.”
